Recognition & YÖK: what to know before you apply
Whether a foreign degree can be used in Türkiye depends less on the diploma itself than on which institution, which programme and under what conditions it was earned. This page simplifies the process; the final decision always rests with YÖK.
How does the recognition process work, step by step?
The flow below is a general roadmap. Extra documents or steps may be required depending on the institution, programme and graduation year.
-
Pre-application recognition check
Check whether your target university and programme appear among the institutions YÖK recognises. Skip this and every later step becomes risky.
-
Comparing the programme content
Course content, credit/ECTS load, internship and practical hours are compared with the Turkish equivalent. The comparison is more detailed in health, law, engineering and teaching.
-
Verifying where the education actually took place
You are expected to have studied in the country and on the campus where you enrolled. Distance, branch-campus or third-country delivery triggers further review.
-
Graduation and preparing the documents
Diploma, transcript, syllabi and the required translations and certifications are completed. Consistency of names, dates and programme titles matters.
-
Submitting the application to YÖK
The file is reviewed; outcomes range from direct recognition to further review, a level-determination exam or completion studies.
Is your programme risky for recognition?
Tell us your target university and programme; we will share the known risks and the exact questions to ask the official body, free of charge.
- Your advisor replies within 24 hours.
- The pre-assessment is free.
- Your details are used only to answer your request.
8 questions to answer before you apply
If your answer to even one of these is "I don't know", stop and check before paying any enrolment fee.
- 1Is the university recognised by YÖK?
An institution's official status at home and its recognition in Türkiye are separate matters; check both.
- 2What is the language of instruction and how will it appear on the diploma?
Turkish, English or Macedonian instruction can affect language-certificate requirements and course content.
- 3Do the programme length and total ECTS match the Turkish equivalent?
Missing credits are one of the most common reasons for a completion requirement.
- 4Are the required internship, practical and clinical hours met?
In health and teaching programmes in particular, practical hours are examined line by line.
- 5Is the teaching actually delivered on campus?
Distance, hybrid or foreign branch-campus delivery requires further review.
- 6Do you plan to transfer?
Transfers between institutions or countries complicate the file and trigger extra document requests.
- 7What is your goal after graduation?
Practising in Türkiye, doing a master's or working abroad each carry different requirements.
- 8Do the identity details on your documents match exactly?
Name or date mismatches between passport, diploma and transcript take a long time to fix.
What should you watch out for?
The headings below describe general tendencies; every file is assessed on its own terms.
Institution with unclear recognition
If the institution's official status is unclear, every other step is moot. Check this first.
Missing credits or a short programme
Programmes noticeably shorter than the Turkish equivalent can lead to a completion requirement.
Distance or branch-campus study
Where the education physically took place is one of the central questions in the review.
Frequent institution changes
Moving between several countries or institutions can send the file to further review.
Choosing an established, recognised institution
An institution's academic track record and experience with international students make the process predictable.
Written confirmation before applying
Getting the programme content, ECTS load and internship hours in writing ends later disputes.
Verify directly with official institutions
Recognition decisions are made by the official bodies below, not by consultancies. Check current rules with these sources before applying.
Recognition of the university
A university being recognised by YÖK does not mean every diploma it awards is automatically considered equivalent.
Equivalence of the diploma
Equivalence is an individual application made after graduation; programme level, duration, ECTS, language, attendance and, in some fields, an extra exam are assessed together.
Let us review the risks together before you decide
Share your target programme and your plans after graduation; we will send you in writing which points are critical for you and exactly what to ask the official body.
