Taxi Guide: BeeRide, Wizi and Taxi Phrases

Where to download BeeRide and Wizi, which taxi to take at the airport, how the options compare and short Macedonian phrases for the driver.

In Skopje, book your taxi through an app first

Some street taxis quote a price without switching on the meter once they notice you are new in town. In an app you see the fare before you get in, and the driver, plate and route are recorded. For Skopje we recommend BeeRide and Wizi. Install both; if one has no car nearby, open the other.

Landing at Skopje Airport

Taxi service at the airport is run by an authorised company. Numbered cars queue at the rank outside the terminal, and fares to the city centre and other towns are posted at the exit and inside each car.

  • Do not go with people who offer a ride inside the terminal; walk straight to the rank.
  • Point to your destination on the price list and confirm it with the driver before you get in.
  • If you book through an app, message the driver a pickup point; app cars may not be allowed into the official rank.

Before your first ride

  1. Install the app before you travel, register with your phone number and make sure the verification SMS arrives.
  2. Type your dorm or flat address in Latin letters; if the street does not show up, drop the pin on the map yourself.
  3. Check the plate and driver name against the app before getting in.
  4. Share the trip with a friend and carry small denar notes in case card payment fails.

If you have to take a local taxi

  • Only use cars with a company name, phone number and taxi sign; avoid unmarked cars.
  • Ask whether the meter will be switched on before you get in: Ќе го вклучите ли таксиметарот? Pronunciation: Kje go vkluchite li taksimetarot?
  • In Tetovo, Gostivar, Štip or Ohrid, if no car appears in the app, ask your dorm or landlord for a registered taxi company's number.
  • Carry small notes; change for large notes can be a problem.
  • If overcharged, note the plate and company and calmly pay the metered amount.
